Singaporean landmarks in anime form aren’t a new thing (it’s been done in Cowboy Bebop, A Place Further Than The Universe, and even an ad by the director behind Your Name) so get ready for one more take. The 23rd Detective Conan film (yes, there are actually 22 in the popular franchise) will be set among the vibrant cityscapes of Singapore, according to its trailer.
Anime News Network reported that Detective Conan: Fist of Blue Sapphire will be set in Singapore — the first Detective Conan film to be set outside of Japan. In fact, Marina Bay Sands will be the site of a murder case, which somehow involves a blue sapphire that sank to the bottom of the ocean in the 19th century. Other than that, we don’t know what the film’s plot will entail, aside from the fact that it’ll feature the Merlion spewing blood, a karate master of some sort, and beautifully rendered scenes of animated Singapore landscapes.
Detective Conan himself — a detective that was forced to ingest an experimental poison that turned him into a small child — doesn’t appear much in the trailer, but the plot apparently involves his gentleman thief pal Kaito Kid bringing him to Singapore against his will. Don’t ask us why.
The film will be released on April 12.
