After two years, the event all sneakerheads in Singapore look forward to, Sole Superior returns for a physical event on Nov. 26.

This year’s event will be held at underground nightlife spot, Drip. Co-founder Jon Fong told Coconuts that it feels fantastic to return with a full-scale event this year.

Earlier this year they did a mini pop-up, Small Superior Vol 1 with The Projector and according to Fong, the response was super positive. “We felt a responsibility not to take any pandemic-related health and safety risks for the past two years despite really wanting to reconnect with our friends and the community,” he said.

Sole Superior began in 2013 by Dexter Tan and Jon Fong – both sneakerheads – who wanted to start a community of streetwear and sneaker enthusiasts to celebrate global brands, local labels, artists, customizers, resellers and everyone in between.

Almost a decade later, Fong is still as passionate about the scene – and still keeps up with the trends. Well, some.

While there are some trends he feels he might need some convincing like extreme pre-ripped distressed jeans, luxury brands ripping off 90’s skate shoe brand designs and baggy, shaggy, bell-bottoms that cover 60% of sneakers, he likes some classic trends that are making its rounds too.

“I love that some aspects of what’s cool with fashion now is exactly what I was into in the mid-90s as a skateboarding music nerd. I massively appreciate boxy cuts, band merchandise and the overall preference for wearing things a little baggy,” he says.

On top of shoe shopping, visitors can expect to cop some of the event merch – a homage to that scene in Stranger Things – and a special preview of the Sole Superior x Saint Barkley sneaker which is a cross-border collaboration with some friends in Indonesia. The sneaker is inspired by scratch and sniff stickers of the 80’s, so expect a fresh pair of kicks that looks and smells dope.

Fong said the event this year is an opportunity to reconnect and gather with fellow sneakerheads and streetwear enthusiasts to celebrate the things they love – and have missed in the past two years. There will be also be chiptune Gameboy electronic musical magic from the diverse BINARY collective and as with every past Sole Superior events: loads of giveaways and lucky draw prizes galore.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite and start from S$10.
