Shared-housing culture is having a moment in Singapore, with no fewer than three co-living companies cropping up here in recent months. Now, new hotel chain ST Signature is extending the allure of that communal life to tourists visiting the country with the opening of its first branch in Chinatown.

The “co-living hotel,” which began operations in July, houses minimally designed sleeping cabins and stylish communal spaces that provide ample mingling opportunities with other guests.

The ST boasts 40 different cabins of different sizes to choose from: 26 single cabins, 11 double cabins, and three triple cabins; costing from S$60 to S$200 (about US$44 to US$146) a night.

Shared facilities include toilets, kitchen, and hangout spots within the hotel called the Cove, the Lawn, and the Patio.

(We’ll just set aside, for now, the obvious philosophical questions, like whether all hotels are, by definition, “co-living” spaces, and whether branding a hotel as such is merely an excuse to make you share a bathroom with other guests.)

The ST Signature has separate male and female bathrooms, each fitted with four water closets and three showers, as well as a separate unisex bathroom. Toiletries by UK’s The White Company are available for use.

The kitchen, billed as the Cook Lab, is complete with Miele-brand kitchen appliances so guests can prepare their own meals or show off their culinary skills to other guests if they wish to do so. (If you’d rather someone else do the cooking for you, you can also hit the hotel’s chat platform on the ST Signature website to place an order with the 11 partnering restaurants.)

Guests are also expected to use the chat platform to access most of the hotel’s services, including checking in and out. You can even check in as early as 24 hours prior to arrival to receive room numbers and access codes ahead of time.

In addition to mingling with other guests in the communal spaces, you can also get to know your fellow co-livers — to organize an outing, for instance — via the chat platform.

ST Signature Chinatown is just the first of five branches set to open in Singapore, with the next one due to launch in Tanjong Pagar later this month.
