Feng Shui is essentially a network of laws that help you decide on the spatial arrangement and orientation in your home. The idea is to set up your environment such that there is an ideal flow of energy, so that each area of your life (money, health, career etc) can thrive.

“Going by the typical Singaporean operandi modus (yes, we’re talking about the spirit of being kiasu), you can never be too careful, or too prepared. And, hey, if you can protect your wealth and create positive energy that will help it to multiply – why not? Check out our list of tips that will help you to choose a property according to Feng Shui!

1. Your door should not face the lift.

Feng Shui likens the opening and closing of the lift door to a tiger opening its mouth and getting ready for its next meal – and it is said that if your front door faces the lift, it will cause disharmony, fights and accidents in the family.

If your front door does face the lift, alleviate the situation by placing five emperor coins on the ground. Alternatively, you may place a ‘Guan Gong’ figurine inside your house, having it face your door directly.

2. Your door should not directly face your neighbor’s door.

Apparently, when this happens, it increases the amount of conflict and builds up negative energy that will result in quarrels and arguments. Choose a unit that doesn’t face any neighbors to avoid this situation, or simply hang a Ba Gua on top of your door.

3. Ensure there are minimal ‘barriers’ in your home, and look for a regularly shaped unit.

To facilitate a good flow of energy, choose an apartment which doesn’t have too many corners, and doesn’t have more partitions or walls than is necessary. Try and aim for a unit in which you can have a wide field of sight!

Also, apartments which are regularly shaped (square or rectangular) are highly preferred over apartments with slanted edges or missing corners, because the latter makes it hard for you to ‘optimize’ the area of your life that said edge or corner corresponds with.

If your home is irregularly shaped, and you’re not too keen on doing any renovating, one easy trick is to place a mirror where there is a missing corner. Make sure your mirror is spotless and free from any scratches or flaws!

4. Make sure the toilet is properly positioned.

Toilets are associated with water, and when positioned wrongly, can signify you flushing your wealth down the drain – yikes! Your toilet should be positioned at the perimeter and share an ‘external’ wall of the home.

More importantly, do not purchase a place where the toilet is located in the center or next to the entrance. If you have more than one level in your property, your toilet on the second floor should also not be located directly above the entrance.

5. Do not stay near hospitals, cemeteries and the like.

If your apartment is in close proximity to hospitals, cemeteries, or even places of worship, this means that you’ll constantly be exposed to negative energy. Same goes for police stations and government offices – stay away from them as well!

6. Do not choose a penthouse unit.

It’s true that you’ll get more wind circulating through your house if you live higher up, but for this very same reason, apartments on higher levels are frowned upon in the world of Feng Shui. The further you are from the ground, the harder it is for energy to gather – making it difficult for you to accumulate and benefit from it.

7. Do not buy a home that’s located near the expressway.

Energy flow is thought to be meandering (like how water flows through a river), and consequently, this means that it is difficult to accumulate wealth on a straight road. Because of this, homes located along expressways are a big no-no!

For the staunch believers, there are many Feng Shui masters who will be able to help you do a more detailed analysis to calculate your house ‘gua’. This is used to determine which areas of your house are the ‘luckiest’, which will in turn influence what you use these areas for. Happy house-hunting and may your potential home be surrounded by positive energy!
