If you’re a fan of The Straits Times comments section — or rather a fan of mocking the ludicrously inane things written by Facebook commenters — you will no doubt be aware of the immortal line, “How can dis b allow?”.
That short phrase seems to encompass everything that crotchety local netizens represent: bad grammar, outdated/unnecessary shorthand, and most of all, a whiny, patronizing tone. The quintessential expression is even used ironically now in response to any trigger-worthy happenings in Singapore.
Highly popular among young folks adept in dank internet humor, The Straits Times Comment Section Facebook page expressed the desire to put out some merch. A bulk of the profits would go to the Straits Times Pocket Money Fund, so it all goes full circle.
Well, it seems like someone else jumped at the opportunity. A brand called DEGEN was launched in January selling only one product — t-shirts with “How can dis b allow?” done up in a box logo a la Supreme.
If you’re interested in getting one, tough luck because they’re all sold out as of today. Sadly, DEGEN has no plans to produce more of the dope/dank tees, but that may change in the future.
