We know this might break your brains or cause you to question reality, but there was a time when pop stars actually sang their songs live instead of lip-syncing their performances.
But time erodes everything, even the prized vocal chords of pop prima donnas who once held the world in the palm of their hands (we’re looking at you, Mariah). So it is an understandable fact that most singers put actual musicianship in the back burner and rely on dance numbers, elaborate costumes and pyrotechnics in their live performances — it’s all about pure spectacle after all.
Sometimes though, pop stars actually use their vocal cords (gasp!). Britney Spears, who performed in Singapore for the very first time ever last Friday night, was unapologetically lip-syncing through her whole show (despite her denials), but there was one moment that reminded everyone why she earned the title of being a princess of pop. Sure, it’s less than a minute of actual singing, but watch as Britney slays the hell out of a birthday song.
