Brace yourself: There’s a massive farmers’ market going on in the city this weekend

Heads up, sustainable shoppers — Sprout is back for its second edition this weekend. Billed as a “farm-to-people” festival, the biggest farmers’ market in the city will spread its wares across Suntec’s convention hall across two days, with more than 90 new and recognizable names. This includes farmers and growers, artisanal food brands, and homegrown F&B eateries.

There’s plenty to do and see, with local produce on display, cooking classes in session, snacks for you to sample, and a kids’ corner with interactive activities. To  keep you from getting too overwhelmed, it’s all exhibited in six zones: Buy, Eat, Cook, Grow, Play, and Learn.

If you’re there to shop for greens and fruits, you can browse through the produce of Edible Garden City, Kok Fah Technology Farm, Pacific Agro Farm, Quan Fa Organic Farm, Kin Yan Agrotech, and Kuhlbarra. Alternatively, stock up your depleting pantry with goodies such as raw, unfiltered honey, fermented teas, organic nut butters, meat-free foods, chufa oil and blooming teas from the likes of The Rare Honey Company, Petale Tea, Yocha Kombucha, Chufala Singapore, and Quorn.

Fans of natural and handmade self-care products can also check out the selection of essential oils, aromatherapy roll-ons, body care, and skincare goodies on display.

You should probably come hungry, too, ’cause there’ll be food booths offering nibbles like crispy pork crackling buns, tandoori chicken with naan, and takoyaki balls. Also look out for rice bowls topped with foie gras and unagi by Don8uri, a social enterprise that hires hearing impaired individuals.

You can get meat-free bites like The Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage as well, before you end off with chocolate desserts from The Dark Gallery or brews by Craft Tea Fox for an afternoon perk-me-up.

Once those hunger pangs have been taken care of, head to the main stage to watch cooking demonstrations and sample the dishes. Or get a closer look with cooking masterclasses led by chefs Eric Low from Lush Epicurean, Emmanuel Stroobant from Saint Pierre, and Han Li Guang from Labyrinth.

Those keen on urban farming can ask for tips from brands like Aerospring Gardens, Carbon InQ, Green Spade, and Vegepod, while gardening enthusiasts can pick up a couple planters and pots from The 3 Keys or The Botanist & Her Thieves. Other workshops on offer include tea making, identifying local edible plants, and learning how to create the perfect soil. Just keep in mind that these sessions are ticketed, starting from $15 for workshops and $95 for masterclasses.
