The Bard lives — Celebrate Shakespeare with other lit lovers in Singapore

If April 23 holds a special place in your literature-lovin’ heart, you’re probably already prepared to celebrate Shakespeare Day. Thanks to Brit Prime Minister David Cameron, who launched “Shakespeare Lives” in January, you can expect a worldwide year-long programme to celebrate The Bard’s works on the 400th anniversary of his death.

In Singapore, the British High Commission and British Council have put together a bunch of events happening over the next few months. Even if you’ve never read the playwright’s works, these activities are easy to digest — all you gotta do is check them out with an open mind.

Notable ones include the “Letters to Shakespeare” exhibition that will travel around various libraries, a “Shaking it with Shakespeare” exhibition at the Singapore Philatelic Museum (ongoing till May 2017), Shakespeare in the Park–Romeo & Juliet (Apr 27 onwards), and The European Union Film Festival (May 19).

On the day itself, look out for the Shakespeare stamp set, which debuts at all post offices. You’ll also get the chance to sit in on a panel discussion with names like local thespian Adrian Pang, watch a Shakespeare-themed comedic skit, and view the National Theatre’s Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch live on screen (Apr 23 & 24).

Sounds exciting? Visit the British Council’s website for the full list of events.
