‘Self Portrait’ by Entang Wiharso
Acclaimed Indonesian artist Entang Wiharso’s Self Portrait is a far cry from the traditional self-portraits of modern artists. The work is made up of four panels of acrylic pieces, whose shape remind us of iPhone cases. Created during the artist’s residency at STPI, each acrylic piece is screenprinted with an image Wiharso gathered from the Internet. The images range from glimpses of seminal moments in 20th and 21st century history, to snapshots of pop culture icons. Each piece represents a part of the artist’s memory, but by using identifiable images, Self Portrait also represents a collective memory, a self-portrait of both the viewer and the artist.
