‘Standing Still’ by Simryn Gill
Taken over the course of three years by Singapore-born artist Simryn Gill, Standing Still is one of four photographic series now on display at NTU’s Centre for Contemporary Art in Gillman Barracks. The series depicts abandoned buildings throughout Malaysia, painstakingly documented by Gill.
The photographs are arranged in a grid, where the combination of the colours from each photo and the methodical display of the works stand out against the stark-white gallery walls. Within the individual photographs, each abandoned building is precisely centred within the frame, creating a sense of unity across the series.
The staging of the photographs also creates a perceived harmony across these similarly abandoned, but vastly different types of structures, ranging from small houses to multi-storey buildings.
