‘I Am Just Doing Aesthetics No. 10’ by Wisnu Auri
Indonesian artist Wisnu Auri aims to draw attention to the conflict between the beautiful and the ugly, the present and the past, In I Am Just Doing Aesthetics No. 10.
We see what seems to be a classical figure in the painting, with the face obscured by a dashes of neon pink spray paint. The paint continues past the painting’s frame to spell out the exhibition’s title, seamlessly linking the classical image with the immediately recognizable scrawl of modern-day graffiti. In this particular work, the artist has covered up half of the painting with layers of white paint, as if to erase what was once there. In this action, the artist forces the viewer to judge for themselves on what makes the work aesthetic – is it the classical image below or is it the now “vandalized” final artwork?
