A little dose of Japan is coming to our shores with the first-ever RWS Summer Matsuri in June, and it’s a biggie. From food and drinks to cultural performances and film screenings, you’ve got heaps to explore over the free four-day festival, which welcomes one and all to celebrate what the Land of the Rising Sun has to offer.
Before you get into the heat of things, fuel up on rice bowls, ramen, and seafood dishes. Across 22 F&B booths, the selection spotlights six regions and nine prefectures in the country, and includes over 38 Japanese dishes starting from $3, 40 snack varieties, and 55 types of sake, wine, spirits, and beer.
For award-winning creations, try any of the six donburi bowls made by finalists from Furusato Matsuri Tokyo and vote for your favorite from the likes of crab and kani miso, grilled eel, kuroge wagyu, and chicken with egg.
Otherwise, banish those hunger pangs with Hokkaido specialties such as grilled crabs, scallops and abalone, lamb barbeque, and yakisoba. Then end off with Japanese sweets from Nama melon soft cream to Purin Dora, dorayaki (pancakes) sandwiching custard pudding with a layer of caramel.
To keep spirits high, there’ll be plenty of lively entertainment like the Tokyo Koenji Awa-Odori dance displays, where you can get into the swing of things and bop along with the performers. Or, try your hand at hoisting a towering kanto (lantern) after the Akita Kanto showcase. As the evening winds down, settle in for movie screenings of titles such as The Travelling Cat Chronicles, What a Wonderful Family!, and Little Forest.
Fans of Sanrio can also stop by the Hello Kitty Shinkansen photo wall for selfie ops, West Japan travel tips, and a chance to win gifts.
