6 beauty DIYs you can try with food

1.     Avocado facial mask

Victoria Beckham and Jessica Biel swear by avocado masks, and we can easily see why. Avocado replenishes moisture in tired and dry skin, while honey helps soothe any irritation. This is a great mask for those with dry skin, or just need extra moisturising.

·       ½ a ripe avocado

·       2 tablespoons honey

·       ½ teaspoon organic coconut oil, or extra-virgin olive oil

Mash the avocado till smooth and creamy. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Apply to your face and leave it on for 10 — 15 minutes. Rinse away with warm water.

2.     Oatmeal bath

We all know that oatmeal is one of the best heart-healthy foods out there, but it is actually as good for our outsides as it is for our insides. Oatmeal, thanks to its colloid property when soaked, protects the skin from irritants and soothes itchy, irritated skin. This oatmeal bath is so luxurious and gentle, it’s even perfect for babies!

Blend 1 cup of rolled oats in a food processor until powdery. Add about 1/2 cup into a bathtub of warm running water, until the water turns a milky white.

3.     Organic coconut oil shaving cream

Ever had razor burns, uneven shaving or itchy post-shave legs? Coconut oil to the rescue! Simply rub about 1 tablespoon of coconut oil onto your legs before shaving, and not only will you have a smooth and clean shave, the coconut oil acts as a deep moisturiser, leaving your skin supple without any need for additional lotion.

4.     Egg & yoghurt hair mask

The thought of putting eggs in your hair can be daunting, but eggs are a great source of protein for your hair. The yolk is rich in moisturising fats and proteins. The whites contain enzymes that cleanse hair and scalp from unwanted oils. Yoghurt moisturises damaged hair, while gently stripping away dirt. A protein hair treatment at the convenience of your bathroom; give this a try!

·       2 eggs

·       1/2 cup plain yoghurt

·       1/2 cup honey

·       1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Beat eggs till frothy, and whisk in olive oil. Add in yoghurt and honey, until creamy. Spread the mixture on your damp hair, combing through from roots to end. Wrap your hair in a warm towel for 20-30 minutes before rinsing with cold water, and shampooing it out.

5.     Citrus & coconut exfoliator

Body scrubs come in plenty of scents, and the more exotic, the heftier the price. With a simple basic recipe of sugar, oil and natural scent, it is easy to have your own exfoliator at a fraction of the price. Try the recipe below for a start. The abrasiveness of the sugar rubs off dirt and dead skin, the lemon juice works as a mild skin peel revealing brighter, smoother skin, and the coconut oil provides deep-skin moisturising.

·       1/3 cup organic coconut oil, melted

·       1/2 cup sugar

·       2 tablespoons lemon zest

Combine all ingredients together. Scrub the mixture all over the body, rubbing it in for a few minutes. Rinse away with warm water.

6.     Natural deodorant

One of the first commercial beauty products I discarded was my trusty, yet paraben and aluminium-filled deodorant. After years of using it, I discovered it was the cause behind recurring episodes of swollen painful lymph nodes. A natural deodorant might seem a bit of a hassle, but what’s a little more effort to avoid cancer-causing chemicals? Baking soda absorbs sweat and kills bacteria, but might irritate sensitive skin, hence the low amount in the recipe below.

·       1/4 cup organic coconut oil

·       2 tablespoons arrowroot powder or cornflour

·       1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon baking soda

Mix all the ingredients together, then store in a jar. Apply with a cotton pad, or your fingers.
