This hawker lady gives food coupons to the elderly so they can redeem free meals from her stall

Madam Wong Li Er is a big-hearted lady. Twice a month, the 65-year-old hawker doles out self-made food coupons to the elderly so they can redeem meals at her stall, Cambridge Rd Hong Kong Roast Pork, whenever they need to. Having lived in the same neighbourhood for decades, she’s familiar with the community, and they all recognise her as the generous woman who feeds them out of the goodness of her heart.

‘I don’t have many skills, neither do I have an education,’ she muses. ‘So I use food to give back to society and the needy. It’s the best I can do.’

‘When you see the smile on their faces, it brings me so much happiness. It’s a feeling money can’t buy.’

The humble lady acknowledges the financial and physical strain of running a hawker stall and helping others, but she brushes it off easily. ‘What’s most important is to feel contented inside,’ she explains.

Her story is told in a video by Tiger Beer, as part of its initiative to preserve Singapore’s street food culture. Watch it on the brand’s Facebook page.

Cambridge Rd Hong Kong Roast Pork is located at #01-18 Pek Kio Market and Food Centre, Blk 41A Cambridge Rd.
