Sometimes, when restaurants attempt to get experimental in the kitchen for special occasions — say, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day or Christmas — the results aren’t always that interesting (or even successful). But Yum Cha’s new bak kut teh xiao long bao (pork rib broth steamed dumpling) creation for National Day sure sounds like a combination of two already-great dishes.
For $5.20 (because SG52), you’ll get three piping hot xiao long baos filled with a flavorful broth that’s made with pork ribs, pepper and herbs. The limited edition steamer basket is available from now till Aug 13.
Sure, Din Tai Fung has already come up with a chilli crab version of the xiao long bao, but those have been around for a while now — about 10 years, it seems — and you know how much Singaporeans just adore trendy new things.
Anyway, before you rush down to either eatery for your fill of exotic xiao long baos, just make sure you know the proper way of eating one. If you’re feeling like fulfilling your duty in patriotic cuisine, here’s a list of National Day-inspired foods to try next month.
