Army rations are often times hit or miss — but as Every Singaporean Son knows, out in the field where food is scarce and rigorous training is endless, we certainly wouldn’t be picky about the flavors and textures of our meals.
However, real life is another story. For those who’ve been through National Service — ever wondered if you’d be able to recognize the familiar taste of army rations even when they’re disguised and spruced up as ‘regular’ dishes?
Some Singaporean guinea pigs had a chance to try glutinous rice with chicken, baked macaroni, and baked pasta, and verdicts ranged from “tasted like cat food” to… “wow”.
