Sweet and savoury chimney cakes stack up high at this new Scape café

If you’re unfamiliar with chimney cakes, they’re a traditional Eastern European pastry. Otherwise known as Kürtőskalács, these popular Hungarian street snacks are made from rolling and wrapping layers of sweet yeast dough that’s been sprinkled with sugar onto a cylindrical container before baking. Basically, the end result is soft, bread-like pastry that has a crispy crust and a hollow centre.

And since each chimney cake is made to order, you’ll have to wait about 10 minutes for your freshly-prepared treat.

Next up, the toppings – choose from sweet ones ($3) like cinnamon sugar, peanuts or Oreos, or go the savoury route ($3.50) with chicken ham, turkey bacon or salted egg. You can also throw in an extra $1 for Nutella or peanut butter on your sweet chimney cakes.

Otherwise, there’s always the chimney cake with soft serve vanilla or chocolate ice cream ($4.50) if you need to cool down on a hot day.

Chimney is at #02-02 *Scape, 2 Orchard Link. Mon-Fri 11am-9pm, Sat & Sun 11am-3pm, 5pm-10pm.
