Subway Singapore confirms it’s going halal, stops selling pork across all outlets

Yeap, it’s definitely happening. International submarine sandwich chain Subway is definitely going halal, and it’s already stopped serving pork products at all outlets across the island today.

Last month, 60 Subway outlets ceased the sale of pork products, but were not officially marked safe for Muslims to eat. For that, they needed to first get a Halal certificate from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) — a process that has already started, according to a Facebook update this morning.

No other details were provided, and it’s not confirmed for sure if Subway will even succeed in getting a halal cert (it’s quite a complex process). Nonetheless, lovers of Subway’s BLTs™ and Meatball Marinaras™ for the last 22 years of the chain’s existence went apeshit.

The outrage over Subway turning halal has already been discussed in our contentious op-ed here, but it should be clear that the chain just wants to attract a new demographic — a business decision probably driven by ailing sales and attention. Turning halal may even push the chain to actually serve decent sandwiches that don’t taste like mushy mystery meat, no matter which protein is picked.
