Guess we can now have our noodles and eat ’em, thanks to Tamoya Udon‘s launch of its latest Bijin noodles at the end of the month. What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s basically Japanese shirataki noodles, which have been hailed as zero-calorie “miracle” noodles.
Made from konjac root, the high-in-fiber and low-in-carbs noodles apparently help with weight loss, and they’ve been gaining popularity over the years, especially since they’re also vegan and gluten-free.
So the Liang Court udon restaurant decided to get on board with the healthy eating trend and debut its limited edition Bijin noodles series in four flavors on Mar. 28. Oooh-mami is coated in XO sauce and tossed with onsen egg, dried sakura ebi, and bonito flakes, while the cold rendition of the noodles comes marinated in sesame shoyu sauce and served with five types of veggies, minced pork, and ramen egg.
As for Kake, it’s a bowl of noodles in dashi broth with your choice of protein (beef or pork), and Sanuki features a soy dashi broth, also with the same protein options.
If you, like us, are a little wary about the low-carb and zero-calorie claim being too good to be true, turns out it’s actually a thing. Apparently, the noodles don’t contain any calories because they’re made of glucomannan starch, a dietary fiber that contains very few digestible carbs. What a miracle indeed.
Unfortunately, the one possible drawback of consuming shirataki noodles could be short-term digestive side effects, including bloating and discomfort.
Looks like we’re still stuck with everything in moderation — back to the drawing board then.
