Skinny’s Lounge, Bar Kiharu, and Bell Bar are the first three bars allowed to reopen today nine months after Singapore ordered nightlife businesses closed due to COVID-19.

The three bars may now open under a two-month pilot program to assess whether high-risk venues can reopen safely, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Bar operators have to follow strict safety measures such as wearing masks and not serving after 10:30pm.

Bar operators must also make sure they have installed security cameras in all common areas. If they breach any of the measures, they face removal from the program, and a fine of S$10,000 as well as possible jail time.

Skinny’s Lounge is located at Boat Quay, Bell Bar at Cuppage Plaza, and Bar Kiharu at Orchard Plaza. They were among six bars nominated by the Singapore Nightlife Business Association and the Singapore River One, who received proposals on how the bars intend to reopen safely.

Similar test runs for karaoke parlors and nightclubs are expected to begin in January.
