Golden Shoe Food Centre, which has been operating for about 33 years, finally shuttered yesterday (Jul 31) to make way for the time-worn building to be redeveloped into one of the CBD’s tallest office towers.

But fret not, fans of the food. You’ll still be able to find most of your favorite hawkers at the temporary food centre about 200m away.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) told Channel NewsAsia that 53 out of 56 stallholders have decided to continue their operations at the interim hawker centre, which opened today (Aug 1) right next to Telok Ayer MRT Station along Cross Street. It will remain open until the new 51-storey integrated development replacing Golden Shoe Car Park is completed in 2021.

According to the NEA, “many of the stallholders have expressed that they are in the process of re-stocking their goods, carrying out retrofitting and cleaning up their stalls. As such, the stalls will open for business progressively from Aug 1, 2017.”

So perhaps don’t get too excited just yet — give the hawkers some time to settle in before you head over for your regular dose of fried chicken biryani from Golden Nur’s and chicken cutlet from Johnson Western Food.
