An omakase from Sapporo which high-ranking officials and celebrities frequent has opened its first outpost in Suntec City.

Located on the third floor of the mall, Nagai Hokkaido Cuisine is helmed by Makoto Nagai, the son of chef-founder Shinichiro Nagai, who is managing the Sapporo outlet.

This is the restaurant’s first overseas outpost (not even available in other Japanese cities) after operating for 29 years. It is said to be frequented by Japan’s Prime Minister, the Japanese Imperial Family and celebrities.

The restaurant is prided by its fresh ingredients and intimate interior for private dining. The 64-seater space includes three private dining rooms and a chef’s counter for those who want to be closer to the chef and bear witness to the food preparation.

Head Chef Makoto Nagai has been picking up the skills from his father for the past 16 years and will serve lunch sets that start from S$28 and omakase menus from S$98 in Singapore.

All fresh ingredients are flown in from Sapporo twice a week.

There are four omakase menus priced at S$98, S$138, S$198 and S$380. They range from having appetizers, sashimi, grills, chef specials, a main and dessert.

The sets, available for lunch and dinner, all come with the restaurant’s signature Hand-carved Ice Plate Sashimi that serves sashimi — Kinki Fish, Hirame, Akami, Botan Ebi, Kazunoko, Shirako, among others — on a block of ice.

There are 15 lunch sets starting at S$28. Their bestseller is the Premium Kaisen Don (S$45) which is made with botan ebi, ikura, salmon, kazunoko, uni, maguro, and hirame, served with rice, miso soup, chawanmushi and pickles.

Hokkaido A5 Wagyu is served in their Wagyu Roast Beef Set (S$48) that comes with three daily special sashimi, rice, miso soup, chawanmushi, and pickles.

There’s also the Yakitori Set (S$28) served with meat skewers and sides, and the Tempura Set (S$28) with deep-fried seafood and vegetable tempura.

Sakes that blend well with the food include the fruity and mild Kitano Nishiki Junmai Daiginjo, and Niseko Junmai Ginjyo, another smooth sake brewed from the skiing mountains of Niseko in Hokkaido.
