San Francisco bakery brings its ‘cruffins’ to second life in Singapore

A San Francisco bakery which shut all its outlets there and in Asia will reopen in Singapore with its distinguished invention of bakes.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse, known for creating the “cruffin,” a croissant and muffin hybrid, is set to open its first store in Southeast Asia at the Pacific Plaza shopping mall next month. The store said it closed its seven locations in San Francisco and Seoul due to the “ongoing and unforeseeable end” of the pandemic. The bakery did not indicate why it chose Singapore, which is also feeling coronavirus pain.

Media in San Francisco reported in 2015 that the bakery’s original chef responsible for its innovative creations departed months after it opened following the mysterious theft of his recipes.

Cruffin lovers nonetheless will soon be able to chow down on the cream-filled pastries on the ground floor of the Orchard Road mall. The 41-seat space is themed in the eatery’s signature white and pink, with pink ceilings, white tiles, and absolutely photo-worthy neon signs.

Besides the cruffin, find a selection of bakes switched up every three months with new sweet and savory offerings which include donuts and croissants. The bakery has yet to reveal its upcoming menu – which formerly included pastries with flavors like Ferrero Rocher, Thai tea, salty kaya and mandarin-thyme.

Established in 2014, the bakery and cafe rose to fame after its cruffins went viral, which have since been trademarked. The bakery is named after an employee’s cat who currently resides in Brisbane and “is a very good boy and doesn’t accept media enquiries,” according to Mr. Holmes Bakehouse.
