When you think McDonald’s, you don’t exactly think healthy. Even though the fast food giant has made attempts to tag along on the #eatclean trend with lighter meals like salads and wraps, we’re pretty sure most of its customers are there for the nuggets, cheeseburgers, fries, and the sweet, sweet release from Double McSpicies.
But hey, the Golden Arches should be applauded for its determination to draw the health-conscious through its doors. The latest menu addition, surprisingly, is a bowl of red rice porridge ($3.40) that’s as wholesome as it is filled with whole grains.

Created by local chef Anna Lim, aka Souperchef Anna, the now-available permanent brekkie item is a mix of red rice (a type of rice higher in fiber and antioxidants), shiitake mushrooms, beancurd, sweet potato chunks, goji berries, and corn.
It may not look as appetizing as a Sausage McMuffin, but the draw of each savory spoonful, we assume, lies in knowing that what you’re eating is low in fat and calories (one serving contains less than 150 calories).

We’re not entirely sure if we’d pick this over crispy hash browns or fluffy hotcakes washed down with overly sweet sips of Milo, but early reviews have described it as unexpectedly flavorful. So give it a shot if you can step into a McDonald’s in the morning and resist the call of a Big Breakfast.
