Popular murtabak joint Zam Zam Singapore shuts down temporarily as staff head to Mecca for pilgrimage

Call it a ballsy or risky (even downright foolish) move, but one of the city’s best purveyors of murtabak and Indian-Muslim fare, Singapore Zam Zam, decided to cease operations for 10 days. During the busiest, most lucrative time of the year nonetheless, in the closing days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the subsequent Hari Raya Puasa celebrations.

But don’t assume that they’ve made a huge business mistake — verily, there are other things to care about besides money. The whole restaurant shut down because they’re on a company trip to Mecca for Umrah, the minor pilgrimage to the Muslim holy land. Praise be.

Reception to the company’s decision has been overwhelmingly positive, with many Muslim patrons wishing the staff well in their spiritual journey.

For now, it looks like you’ll have to satisfy your murtabak cravings at their fierce next-door rivals Victory Restaurant instead. And by fierce rivals, we really mean fierce — after all, Zam Zam boss Zackeer Abbass Khan has been accused of being the one behind a vicious attack on a staff member of Victory.
