Looks like this is the year of the chilli crab, what with one of Singapore’s biggest homegrown brands feeding its obsession with the iconic local dish by building a festival around it. For Old Chang Kee’s Chilli Crab Fest, ongoing from July 15 to Aug 31 to coincide with the nation’s birthday celebrations, the company’s umbrella of brands will serve all sorts of dishes with chilli crab as the main star.
Check out the creations below.
Chilli Crab ‘O
Once again, Old Chang Kee reinvents its signature curry puff (past attempts include nasi lemak and rendang chicken) for a seasonal treat. This time, chunks of crab meat with chilli crab sauce are stuffed into buttery pastry painted a patriotic red, which you can get at all Old Chang Kee stores for $2.20.
Chilli Soft Shell Crab Nasi Lemak
Experimental nasi lemak recipes may have been all the rage last year, but Old Chang Kee maintains its obsession with the rice dish at its newest Kallang Wave nasi lemak store, where more than 30 sides are available as add-ons to your order.
For a limited time, you can try the chilli soft shell crab nasi lemak with the usual trimmings of ikan bilis, peanut, fried egg, cucumber, and sambal, plus additional sides like sambal petai ($3.90), curry vegetables ($3.90), and sambal sotong ($3.90).
Flower Bread with Chilli Soft Shell Crab
At the brand’s retro flagship coffee house, you’ll find two new sharing plates on the menu: flower bread that you can dip with chilli soft shell crab ($14.90) and mussels stir-fried with chilli crab sauce ($14.90).
Soft Shell Crab Noodles with Chilli Crab Sauce
The combination of soft shell crab and chilli crab continues at Curry Times, which has outlets at malls like Velocity and Northpoint City — it’s serving up a dish of thick bee hoon noodles tossed with chilli crab sauce, with a side of crispy soft shell crab ($14.90).
Chilli Crab Bun
Those looking for a quick bite can try the chilli crab bun, crammed with crab meat and chilli crab sauce, available at Curry Times and Bun Times stores at Tiong Bahru Plaza and Fairprice Hub.
Chilli Crab Soft Shell Crab Dip
Rounding it all up, the new item at Woodlands MRT’s Dip ‘n’ Go is, of course, a chilli soft shell crab one. So if you’re in the area and feeling peckish, snacks like chicken skin ($3.90), baby squid ($5.90), fries ($3.90), and chicken chunks ($4.90) are available for you to douse in the dip.
Guess that’s your chilli crab quota for the year, sorted.
