After four years of watching Bangkok’s Gaggan refuse to budge from its number one spot on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, Odette in Singapore finally gave it the shove and took over as the top eatery in the region. Rising up from its fifth position last year, Julien Royer’s two Michelin-starred French fine dining venue is the country’s first to win the honor. Naturally, Odette also clinched the title of Best Restaurant in Singapore.

This year’s list spotlighted 10 new entrants, including a debut from Malaysia (Dewakan at #46) and new Toyo Eatery (#43) in the Philippines, as well as Macau’s Wing Lei Palace getting a first time feature at 36th position.

Overall, Japan garnered the most representations with a total of 12 names, including Den at third place. As for Thailand, Gaggan dropped one rank to second spot, but kept its title of the best restaurant in the country. Bangkok’s Gaa made a splash debuting at 16th place as the highest new entry, alongside fellow newcomer Sorn at 48th position.

Singapore squeezed in seven restaurants, with Nouri making its first appearance at 39th spot, while Hong Kong counted nine names on the list, including first-timers Vea at 34th place and Seventh Son at 44th. Elsewhere, Bali’s Locavore was named Best Restaurant in Indonesia, winning the Sustainable Restaurant Award in Asia.

As always, the rankings are compiled by surveying more than 300 restaurant insiders across Asia, including food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs, and “gastronomes.”
