For those who don’t frequent Katong, the vibrant neighborhood in the East known for its rich food scene — well, here’s a little slice of Joo Chiat that you can get in Orchard. Sinpopo Brand, the popular hipster-ized retro café set up by the people behind Awfully Chocolate, has just opened a takeaway store at Paragon.
Its familiar red and blue logo is stamped on one wall, with drool-worthy photos of locally-inspired baked goods draped across another. There’s a display counter filled with a colorful assortment of cakes, strategically placed to face passers-by, and probably enticing even the non-dessert lovers among us.
Sinpopo’s menu here are a bit limited compared to its offerings in Joo Chiat, but you can still get customer favorite cakes ($8/slice, $62/whole cake) in flavors like ondeh ondeh, kueh sarlat, pulut hitam (in original or durian for an extra $6), gula melaka, and baked apple. Each confection is flavorful, yet moist and light — so you get the essence of the dessert it’s inspired by without feeling too gelat too fast.
For something to snack on, the shop’s got jars of the café’s signature salted egg yolk cookies.
And, customers who spend at least $53 in the store will get a turn at Sinpopo’s Gachapon machine, those Japanese-style vending machines that dispense small toys and knickknacks. It’s part of the National Day celebrations — according to Sinpopo, this game comes with a guaranteed prize in the form of dine-in vouchers, free online delivery, or complimentary slices of cake.
All the more reason to get your cake on.
