Robots are the way of the future, and one hawker centre at agrees. Located at Jurong West Street 61, the new 500-seat Jurong West Hawker Centre is managed by social enterprise Hawker Management — a subsidiary of food centre operator Koufu — on a not-for-profit basis.
Each of the 34 cooked food stalls offers two regular-sized dishes at $2.80 each, and Hawker Management said in a statement that it would dole out food vouchers each year to those in need. The centre also has 14 market slab stalls hawking fresh produce and groceries.
As part of its Happy Hawkerpreneur programme, Hawker Management has set aside six cooked food stalls for “passionate aspiring hawkers”, in a move to encourage budding hawkers to “pursue their culinary dreams”. Some of these stalls include Mama’s Kitchen — Dry Laksa, Dim Sum, Chapatis Wala, and Grandma’s Delights, which sells nasi lemak and bee hoon.
Besides doing its part for “hawkerpreneurs”, the hawker centre is also all about technology, with a RFID tray return system that dispenses 20 cents as an incentive to customers who return their used crockery and cutlery at designated areas. It also employs three SMART Tray Return robots to help with those who are unable to return their plates.
And if you find yourself dining there without sufficient cash, just use one of the eight cashless payment options, which include PayWave, Apple Pay and EZ-Link payment.
Plus, look forward to upcoming festivals, career fairs and even music performances to be held at the hawker centre, in partnership with Community Clubs and schools.
