After bringing in reinterpreted Asian flavors at 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung, The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore goes in a different direction for its two new dining concepts. With a modern approach to traditional German delis, Berthold Delikatessen and Frieda Restaurant are tributes named after Kempinski founder Berthold Kempinski and his daughter, Frieda.
Both spaces exude contemporary flair in their design, with regionally sourced ingredients in the menu of familiar German dishes.
At Berthold Delikatessen, the vibe is classy and casual, with seats in the main dining area, alfresco section, or mezzanine level (for a bout of people-watching). If you’re feeling up for a light meal of salads or sandwiches, the eatery offers options like dark rye sourdough with pastrami ham ($14), charcoaled brioche with chicken or smoked salmon ($14), and beetroot salad ($8).
You can also add more carbs to your diet with the daily line-up of German-style breads, rolls, and pastries, such as bretzel, bauernbrot, and hefezopf, alongside quiches, pies, cakes, and coffees.
For something on the heartier end, Frieda serves German cuisine with an Austrian spin, including plates like beef broth with semolina dumplings and pancake ($16), potato and leek soup ($12), wiener schnitzel ($37), pan-fried rainbow trout ($35), and pretzel dumplings ($27) with mushroom ragout and scallions.
On the dessert side, you can try items such as griessflammerie ($12, semolina pudding with cherry compote), bismarck ($12, pancake with maple syrup), or Viennese apple fritters ($12).
If you’d just like a mug of frosty German beer on tap, head to the day bar for a chill dinner. Otherwise, the dining room is a cozy nook, while the botanical-themed garden cranks the romance up a notch with its lush surroundings that come alive especially at night.
