Taking the humble nasi lemak dish to experimental heights, new Boat Quay eatery DePizza joins in the craze with its own version of — you guessed it — nasi lemak pizza.
Overlooking the Singapore River from its perch on a second-story shophouse (above Burger Bar), the casual joint isn’t afraid to experiment with familiar flavors, whipping up other fusion pies like gu lou yok (sweet and sour pork) and chili crab mantou.
First up, the nasi lemak pizza ($24). On a dough base infused with coconut cream and slathered with fiery, house-made sambal paste, you’ll find sprinkled bits of fried egg, chicken chunks, cucumber bits, ikan bilis, and cheese. Pretty legit-looking, minus some peanuts and scattered grains of rice (for carb-on-carb calories).
Next, the gu lou yok ($22) option, hailed by DePizza as the Asian version of the ubiquitous Hawaiian. This one comes topped with hunks of pork surrounded by pineapples, peppers, and onions, all luxuriating in a bed of sweet and sour sauce.
As for the chilli crab pizza ($26), the restaurant takes things a little further by creating a base made of deep-fried mantou dough, which is then piled with chilli crab sauce, actual crab meat (not those imitation crab sticks), and cheese.
If all this is a tad too unconventional for you, stick to standard pizzas like pepperoni ($18), four-cheese ($20), Hawaiian ($21), and pesto seafood ($24). Or abandon the crust altogether for fried chicken ($15), pork belly ($24), and fish with chips ($18).
To get your pizza fix on weekdays, set lunch combos start from $7.90 for one slice and a drink (that you can upgrade to a half-pint beer for an extra $4 to start boozing early).
DePizza is at 35A Boat Quay, 6588-1359. Mon-Thurs 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-midnight.
