Joining the ever-growing list of restaurants and bars that are shuttering for good this year is Blackwattle, the modern Australian restaurant that opened to much fanfare (and decent reviews) late last year.

However, not even a year later, the project by acclaimed chef Clayton Wells — who’s behind the top-notch Automata in Sydney — is closing its doors, The Straits Times revealed yesterday.

Seems like a few too many consistently empty tables, coupled with its head chef leaving, are behind the eatery’s closure, which will happen at the end of August. Blackwattle is part of the Unlisted Collection’s line-up of restaurants, alongside other well-known names like Cheek By Jowl, Burnt Ends, and Pollen.

Hotelier-restaurateur Loh Lik Peng, who helms the group, explained to ST that “the food has not been compelling enough for diners here,” going on to say that business isn’t fantastic enough to sustain getting another chef on board to take over the existing kitchen. Ouch.

Anyway, if the restaurant is one you’re gonna miss, then you’ll probably want to head over to Amoy Street before month’s end, before another concept takes over the space.
