If the Michelin Guide in Singapore holds sway with you, perhaps the newly-opened Indian Express will be of interest. Put together by the team behind The Song of India, the only Indian restaurant in Singapore with a Michelin star designation (at one star), the casual Race Course Road diner dishes out northern Indian cuisine and Indian-Chinese grub at pocket-friendly prices starting from $6. Heading the kitchen is executive chef Umed Singh, formerly from — you guessed it — The Song of India and protégé of Michelin-starred chef Manjunath Mural.
What this means, then, is that you can essentially get Michelin-related fare without the exorbitant bill. And if you’re cool with that reasoning — or if you’re craving something new apart from your usual go-to Indian joint — then we think the homestyle plates at this eatery will do the trick.
Familiar favorites like butter chicken ($14) and palak paneer ($10) with cottage cheese cubes swimming in a sea of puréed spinach show up on the menu at Indian Express, along with a Punjabi-style tandoori mix grill platter ($19) that serves up lamb chop, fish, chicken tikka, and kebab with a splash of mint yogurt sauce. Other highlights include methi fish ($12) in a fenugreek curry with peppercorns, and Kashmiri lamb rack wazwan ($14), where the protein is rubbed with an aromatic blend of herbs.
Plus, plenty of soups, starters, desserts, lamb, seafood, chicken, and vegetarian variations, and a selection of rice and bread items make an appearance on the extensive menu.
On the fusion side, influenced by the Chinese settlers who arrived in Kolkata in the 1700s, the overwhelmingly long list of dishes ranges from Szechuan egg fried rice ($12) to chili garlic Hakka noodles ($10). They’re loaded with spice on top of spice, so proceed with caution if you’ve got a weak stomach.
Those hosting home parties but are too lazy/busy to cook can keep in mind the restaurant’s catering arm, where five dishes from the standard menu start from $11.90 per person, and 15 dishes goes up to $26.90 per person. Customization is also available for dietary preferences and party size.
