COCONUTS HOT SPOT — 10 years is a pretty legit duration for any restaurant can stay afloat in Singapore, where eateries simply come and go like stale breadsticks — but Dallas Restaurant & Bar gamely flourishes where others have failed.
Wallet-friendly, hearty American meals don’t come as often as we want them to be, but Dallas manages. After 10 years of garnering a stellar reputation for its chill vibes and excellent grub at their bar along the Boat Quay strip, they’ve expanded to a second joint at the Suntec City Sky Garden. Higher in both elevation (with sweet sunset views of Marina Bay) and class (black marble tops, leather high-chairs), the new restaurant easily hosts up to 300 guests in their glasshouse-like digs.
To accompany your chilled brews after a hard day of work in the city, we recommend getting your hands on their tacos as starters. Their fish tacos ($22 for three / $8 for each additional piece) may be light in weight but heavy on the explosion of flavour with their homemade pineapple chutney and chipotle mayonnaise nestled with chunky pieces of snapper.
For something more sinful, get their crispy pork belly tacos ($14 for three / $5 for each additional piece) — fiery portions of crackling and meat that melt like butter in your mouth.
Another excellent starter comes in the form of jalapeño croquettes — deep-fried creamy nuggets of mashed spuds, béchamel sauce, cheddar and pickled peppers.
But enough foreplay — let’s get to the literal meat of things. With complete bias as full-fledged meat lovers, we recommend, nay, demand that you order the Dallas Meat Platter ($70 for two pax / $130 for four).
A nourishing oeuvre composed of grilled Australian lamb cutlets, marinated slow-cooked pork ribs, moist rotisserie chicken and medium-rare prime rib steaks, it was astonishing how the platter was reasonably priced too. As if those weren’t enough, you’ll be getting a side of salad, roasted potatoes and a wide range of sauces and mustards.
Nothing else in the city comes close to the affordability and the majestic volume of Dallas’ superb meat platter, we assure you, that dish alone warrants a monthly visit to the rooftop eatery. The whopper of a meal is part of their premium anniversary meat specials which will run until an uncertain period of time — so you best drop by soon before the too-good-to-be-true offer disappears.
