Crossing the border from Malaysia, Kind Kones recently opened its first store in Singapore at Forum The Shopping Mall. If you haven’t heard of the vegan ice cream parlor, its Orchard Road unit is a warm, white space with a cozy seating area and a family-friendly play corner for little ones to work off their sugar rush.
Not that there are a ton of unseemly ingredients in the sweet treats on offer here. Everything claims to be dairy-free and egg-free, and it’s all made in-house with natural, unprocessed goods that don’t contain refined sugar, preservatives, or artificial additives. With flavors that change every once in a while, the repertoire includes scoops of almond brittle fudge, pandan gula melaka, dragonfruit banana sorbet, salted chocolate chip, sticky toffee pudding, and watermelon strawberry mint.
It’s not the most standard of line-ups, although you’ll find classics like French vanilla bean and dark chocolate on the menu as well. Most of its frozen tubs contain ingredients such as coconut, cashew, almond, and fruits, while the ice cream comes in flourless, gluten-free cones.
You can also get more unusual creations like Haw Flakes, made with cashew milk, coconut milk, almond milk, vanilla, and the fruit of the Chinese hawthorn; Blue Planet, which gets its tint from the blue pea flower and bits of matcha cake; or chendol, containing jackfruit chunks in a coconut base. Plus, other treats like brownies, muffins, chocolate donuts, and cakes rotate in flavors too.
Vegan desserts, or similar healthier alternatives, aren’t too hard to find in Singapore, but we sure do appreciate one in a place as central as Orchard. Oh, and if you’re in the area this weekend, the store’s having its grand opening on Saturday afternoon, with happy hour scoops and free gifts for the first few customers.
