Infuse a medley of Middle Eastern flavors into your weekend brunch at this classy cafe

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Nestled in the Tanjong Pagar neighborhood are two elegant restaurants beautifully inspired by Middle Eastern flavors. Fat Prince is the relaxed cafe setting that you’ll walk into, while The Ottoman Room is the lavish space at the back of the room where you can perch on cosy sofas while you sip a cocktail or two. Both eateries usually offer their own distinct menus, but when it comes to the weekend brunch, they’re all about joining forces (because two is better than one).

To get right into the thick of things, order the modern Turkish breakfast ($21) with warm Turkish cheeses, melon, urfa (Turkish chili pepper) and grilled bread. Or choose from the variety of sizzling scrambled egg skillets (called menemen), which offer options like roasted mushrooms on a bed of eggs, shaved Antep cheese, candied fennel and crispy kale ($23), or Cyprus pork sausages with eggs, sundried olives and crispy spiced potatoes ($26).

For something a little lighter to kick start your day, try the house-made almond yogurt ($16) with buckwheat granola, nuts and seeds so you’ll feel like you made the healthy choice. Alternatively, dig in to the falafel scotch egg ($22) with a lovely fig and fennel salad.

Oh, and even though it’s a little early in the day for dessert, you gotta save space for the Turkish fried dough ($14) — each bite is chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside, and the bag of carbs comes with three dips: sour cherry jam, soft maple halva and hazelnut chocolate (Nutella addicts will love this). Tip: try all three together and relish the blend of flavors swirling around your tastebuds.

When it comes to Turkish coffee, Fat Prince takes itself seriously. Brewed by Sarnies, the lattes, cappuccinos and long blacks are worth giving up sleep for; and if you want to venture away from your usual order, go for the orange chili mocha ($7), the pistachio latte ($7), or the non-caffeinated turmeric latte ($7). Otherwise, to continue where you left off the night before, get a round of cocktails like the Moroccan Mary ($18), a take on the Bloody Mary, or the hard Turkish coffee ($20), a rendition of an espresso martini with gold rum, chocolate and coffee liqueur.

Fat Prince is at 48 Peck Seah St, 6221-3683. Mon-Fri 8am-midnight, Sat 11.30am-midnight, Sun 11.30am-3pm.
