Hot or Not? Freeing SG

What it is: The “escape game” from Hong Kong — a cluster of rooms each consisting of an adventure or mystery you have to solve in limited time — now occupies the picturesque Bugis+ roof terrace. Ranging from the thrilling The Painter’s Murder to the exotic Unforeseeable Pyramid, their games let you indulge in a bit of detective work. Freeing SG aims to have a total of 10 rooms by the end of October.

What’s hot: Being shackled to the ceiling in the horror-themed Silent Blood room was exciting, as with the tricks they’ve got set up in the other rooms. And it got even more thrilling for myself and both my female companions as our 45 minutes quickly started running out — the three of us really had to put our logical minds to the test and every time we solved a sub-mystery we enjoyed a tiny dose of elation.

What’s not: All the mystery and pressure to beat time is sure to tempt you to cheat. I’m not going to lie — we spent more time trying to squeeze out of our handcuffs than actually cracking codes, undid each other’s padlocks by trying every number in ascending order and almost climbed over the enigma’s walls to get to the next room. You’re really going to have to be tough on yourself if you want to make the best of the experience.

Verdict: Hot. Things can and will get boring no matter what city you live in —Freeing SG shakes things up a little and hey, it helps people bond and engage their problem-solving prowess, or at least does a better job of that than binge drinking, LAN gaming or Candy Crush.

Freeing SG has relocated to 3/L, The Cathay, 2 Handy Road, +65 6737 7888. Open daily 11am-12am.
