Hipster hawker centre opens in Pasir Ris, but it’s probably too mainstream by now

Residents in the far reaches of Pasir Ris finally have a hawker centre to call their own, and it’s one that will appeal to both young and old. That’s because the new-age makan spot within walking distance of Pasir Ris MRT offers both traditional fare and more experimental creations, as well as upscale twists on familiar favorites, or as it’s more commonly referred to — hipster cuisine.

The 770-seat establishment officially opened yesterday with 42 stalls across two floors, including popular local dishes on the ground level and literal atas food on the second story.

Though eating from hipster stalls on the second floor would invariably involve forking out more money, every stall is required to offer at least two dishes that are considered budget meals, thanks to hawker center managers NTUC Foodfare. So far, the likes of doner kebab joint EPIKebabs, Louisiana-style seafood chain Cajun on Wheels Express, and gourmet burger vendors Burgernomics.sg have been spotted at Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre.

But the true hipsters here are the older crowd, who’ve been into normcore hawker centres way before there were considered hip.

Set to open daily from 7am to 10:30pm, the hawker centre will also encourage cashless payments via Plus! cards or Plus! Pay and DBS PayLah!, and diners are expected to return their trays and plates after meals. As things should be in every hawker center, really, atas or not.
