Haji Lane is now home to Malaysia’s viral Milo ice kepal dessert (and loaded sausage subs)

One of the newest openings on Haji Lane, Street Submarine is a Halal-certified joint that specializes in loaded sausage subs. Each option has a standard base of chicken sausage and toasted sesame bun, piled high with everything from cheese ($5.50) and chili rendang ($8) to chicken satay ($8) and BBQ pulled beef ($9) to crab and prawn ($8) and Thai chili chicken ($8).

If you’re thinking these are just hotdog buns with extra toppings that cost a whole lot more than, say, Ikea’s basic ones, well, you’re not wrong. But the brand, which started out as a pop-up stall at bazaars and food fairs, has won over the stomachs of diners enough to expand its menu and set up a permanent space. So kudos to the cafe for going the “hipster” route by finding its home at the indie-friendly shopping street.

To add on to your sub, order a round of fries with optional flavorings like Cajun cheese ($4.50), rendang ($5), or beef satay ($5.50).

And about that viral Milo ice kepal dessert from Malaysia — the folks behind Street Submarine were wise enough to hop on the trend while it was still fresh, and that has resulted in the cafe’s own rendition ($5) of the treat, plus a Horlicks version ($5), and a best-of-both-worlds “Michael Jackson” one ($8; geddit?).

Our Ice Kepal!

For those of you who haven’t yet heard of this Milo ice kepal — it’s a huge thing across the Causeway, having gained immense popularity earlier this year because, well, who doesn’t love a good spoonful of nostalgia?

The dish consists of a shaved ice ball that’s been generously doused in Milo, condensed milk, and evaporated milk, and then gets additional sweetening with extra Milo powder and other sugary cereal bits like Milo balls, Fruity Pebbles, and Honey Stars sprinkled on top.

Looking at this super-sized stratification of sugar, you’ll obviously wanna share the calories. Just don’t leave it out too long, though — plenty of people have lamented lagging on eating the dessert, which causes the ice to solidify and become impossible to eat with a flimsy plastic spoon.

If that’s not enough to hit your daily sugar quota, then good news: The eatery also serves Thai milk tea ($6) and fizzy melon in plastic drink bags.
