Fancy a slab of ‘fook kin’ good roast meat? The new spot to get those cravings satiated is Killiney Road, where Class 95 FM DJ duo The Muttons have set up a roast meat joint called Fook Kin. Their new F&B venture after partnering with FatBoy’s The Burger Bar, this eatery is the result of a partnership with Old Airport Road Food Centre hawker Roast Paradise. And the star of the menu here is Cantonese roast meat.
With funky pig paintings splashed on the walls, bird cage lights, remixes of Cantonese oldies blaring through the speakers, and a bright pink neon sign proclaiming, “we fook kin heart you”, this place is worlds apart from your typical traditional Chinese restaurant. Perhaps the only thing old school about it is the Chinese characters on its entrance signboard and those retro foldable gates that are fast disappearing in Singapore these days.
Of course, you have to be a meat lover to pick Fook Kin and brave its long lines (it’s been selling out daily, too). The menu features three types of specialty roasts: “secret sauce” caramelized char siew ($6.80/$17/$34/$65), golden crackling siew yoke ($6.80/$17/$34), and the slow-roasted duck that’s been marinated with 18 herbs and spices ($12/$16/$26/$50), served with angelica herb sauce or “Western” peanut sauce.
If you’re there with a sizeable group, the larger platters are good for sharing, and can be supplemented by rice or noodles ($1.50). Or you could just try all three in a smaller portion with the Roast Paradise bowl ($10.80) that’s paired with your choice of carb.
Sides on offer include crispy squid ($12.80), lotus root crisps ($7.80), salted egg wings and drumlets ($9.80), omelette with preserved turnip ($8.80), and fu lu shou buns ($10.80), with the roasts meats stuffed into brioche buns. For smiles all around, toss in an order of the Triple Happiness ($9.80) so everyone around the table can dig into scoops of cold tofu topped with century egg, salted egg, and salmon roe.
