First look: New underground nightclub Mao opens at kyo’s former CBD space

Our nightlife scene is on a roll when it comes to hip bars and the international recognition they get, but the clubs here — besides grand dame Zouk and, for some reason, Attica — seem to be on a losing streak. Some debut and shutter before you can even yell out “shots!”, while others, despite their loyal revelers, sadly still end up closing their doors for good after a couple of years.

But hey, that means more new places for easily bored clubbers to check out, right?

So if you’ve been grieving the loss of kyo, perhaps it’s time head back to the familiar underground digs on Cecil Street for a night out at Mao, the new club taking over the premises. But it’s a completely different look, of course — don’t expect the same industrial chic vibes as before, ’cause it’s all about neon cats, patterned floors and ceilings covered with hanging red lanterns here.

Brought to you by the same people behind Cherry Discotheque (which is relaunching elsewhere soon) and Peaches (which took over the place vacated by the former), the club is open for merrymaking today with Egyptian trance duo Aly & Fila, but it officially launches on Dec 8.

Expect local DJs and resident DJ Matty Wainwright behind the decks on Fridays, followed by a night of house and techno on Saturdays, and a three-hour free-flow for ladies on Thursdays. For something to munch on after all that booze, the kitchen serves up bar bites such as truffle fries, lobster rolls, and freshly shucked oysters.
