Ellenborough Market Cafe debuts a new look and a buffet of Peranakan dishes, seafood and meats

After months of renovations, Ellenborough Market Café has re-opened with a fresh look that reflects its focus on Peranakan cuisine. The decor in its three dining zones is a mix of heritage and contemporary — there’s the turquoise-and-white main hall decked out with diamond-cut glass wall features; the lilac mezzanine starring a restored stained glass skylight, and the dining room, where the show kitchen buffet is the main draw.

As for the food, it’s a wide selection offering a bit of everything. Local dishes like hokkien mee and seafood hor fun make an appearance, alongside a variety of sushi and sashimi next to the crustaceans on ice. For meat lovers, head to the carving station featuring daily specials like roast beef and leg of lamb.

But Peranakan dishes remain the highlight here, with steaming pots of ayam buah keluak, babi pongteh, chap chye and sambal prawns that you can spoon over coconut rice. There’s also a DIY kueh pie tee station where you get to fill up your own crispy pastry tart shell with as much turnips, prawns, peanuts and eggs as you like. Next to that is the la mian counter featuring a noodle master hand-pulling the strands right in front of you.

After you’ve worked your way through the buffet, end off the meal with sweet treats like durian pengat, ice cream, durian fritters, muah chee, kueh dadar made on the spot, and a colourful variety of cakes and nyonya kuehs.

Ellenborough Market Café is at Swissôtel Merchant Court, 20 Merchant Rd. Buffet breakfast: Daily 6.30am-10.30am; Buffet lunch: $52, daily noon-2.30pm; Buffet dinner: $62-$68, daily 6.30pm-10pm, Buffet high tea: $42, Sat, Sun & PH 3.30pm-5.30pm.
