Rejoice, durian lovers, for your obsession is about to go through the roof (along with your calorie intake). Someone actually opened up a durian specialty café, and it’s way beyond anything your imagination could’ve dreamed up.
Mao Shan Wang Café, a Chinatown eatery helmed by legendary durian experts Four Seasons, is for all those who eat, sleep and breathe the King of Fruits. The industrial-themed space, which serves up creations made with the premium Mao Shan Wang variety, is great for anyone in need of a durian fix – but beware those who enter, for they’ll undoubtedly emerge with stinky breath.
Focusing on sweet and savory treats, the menu offers familiar favorites like durian puffs, cakes, ice cream, pancakes, and mochi. But if you’re feeling adventurous, we’d suggest you go for the slightly more bizarre items such as fries ($3.80) or nuggets ($6) served with a D24 purée dip, or black charcoal durian pizza ($18.80) to go with your cup of durian coffee ($5).
After all, not many people can say they’ve drank a caffeinated version of the stinky fruit.
Just remember: don’t go too crazy or you’ll end up with a durian-induced food coma.
Mao Shan Wang Café by Four Seasons Durian is at 49 Temple St, 6221-2338. Mon-Fri 1:30pm-10pm, Sat 11am-10pm.
