Denzy Gelato offers unusual flavors like elderflower mojito and matcha tofu in Bishan

Blasting an icy wave over the neighborhood of Bishan, Denzy Gelato settles nicely into its spot at an HDB block next to the bus interchange, near enough to the MRT for easy accessibility yet tucked away in a corner for an escape from the multitudes of train-takers. (Anyone who’s ever gotten off at Bishan station during peak hour will know the hordes of commuters aren’t to be messed around with.)

It joins the ranks of residential ice cream parlors dotting the island, including Creamier at Toa Payoh and Cottontail Creamery in Serangoon. Inside the 20-seater, minimalism is the order of the day — it’s simply furnished with dark-hued tables and seats that bring a tinge of the industrial into the space. But what catches your eye the moment you step in, as with all gelato joints, is the display of frosty flavors, all made from scratch and churned fresh in-house.

A single scoop starts from $3.60, doubles will set you back $6.40, and a plate of waffles costs an extra $5. But since you’re here, vanilla shouldn’t be on your mind, ’cause the brand blends some pretty interesting flavors. Think elderflower mojito sorbet (it’s non-alcoholic), basil, matcha tofu, cereal milk, hojicha, Persian Prince (with almond and saffron), and Blondie Beach (made of white chocolate, lime, and salt).

It’s a humble spot for a frozen treat on a blazing hot day, and while you may not be drawn to go out of your way to check out Denzy, it’s quite the cool hangout for residents in the area.
