The latest buzz on the “new and trendy” realm in our food scene — besides KFC’s salted egg chicken and chocolate fries — is this bo luo (pineapple bun) croissant hybrid by Delifrance. Seeing as how the cafe chain has been around in Singapore for over 30 years, it’s not surprising they’re making this attempt to entice the hip, on-trend, Instagram-loving crowd with this new creation. At the very least, it’s something different from their usual breads, tarts, and puffs.
Billed as the first of its kind in our country — it already popped up in Hong Kong a while back — the pastry comes in six varieties, from typical local flavors like salted egg, kaya butter, and crunchy peanut, to more universal favorites such as hazelnut praline, sea salt dark chocolate, and blueberry cream cheese.
Since most of us would’ve already sampled a Delifrance croissant at least once in our lifetimes, you know what to expect from the flaky treat, with its buttery layers and soft, airy center. So think of this as a sweeter rendition with a sugary, crumbly crust (and, depending on which option you choose, a gooey core that oozes out like lava the moment you break into it).
Available at all Delifrance outlets now, the bo luo croissants go for $2.80 per piece, $7.40 for three, $14.80 for six, or $29 for 12.
