Fellow gluttons, where you at? Embracing the Hokkien term “tam jiak” (greedy), a new grab-and-go joint in Orchard is banking on your foodie level of obsession to stuff your face with its croissant taiyaki offerings.
Soe Tam Jiak, a stall in the basement of 313 @ Somerset, is all about that golden buttery bite. The modern Japanese snack didn’t originate here — and neither is it new to the country — but this local brand dishes out its versions in 15 unusual flavors across the sweet and savory spectrum. And when you think about it, the croissant taiyaki kind of has the best of both worlds — flaky, caramelized puff pastries oozing with generous fillings.
On the affordable end, the “Singles” section ($3.50) offers toppings of almond, garlic butter, coconut gula melaka, and cinnamon sugar. But if you’re more of a classic diner, try the range ($4.20) of stuffings like ham and cheese, mashed potato with corn and cheddar, chocolate banana, yam, sweet potato, or red bean.
For a slightly more “premium” experience, $4.80 will get you options such as teriyaki chicken, mushroom, Hawaiian with “pizza sauce”, pineapple cubes, and chicken ham, a cheesy blend of mozzarella, cheddar, and jalapeño, or the “Soetamjiak Breakfast” of egg mayo and chicken ham.
All that crisp goodness can be washed down with coffees or beverages like Ribena fizz and jasmine tea macchiato.
