Next time you find yourself at Duxton Hill, keep an eye out for the vibrant colors of a new drinking hangout, which you may or may not mistake for a PG-13 cafe instead of a boozy spot. The Brightside, so named after Monty Python tune Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, stands out from its sleek and edgy neighbors in the area with quirky, mismatched decor details and bright hues that probably won’t look out of place in a playroom.

But hey, that just means first-time bar-hoppers and even the most apprehensive of drinkers won’t feel intimidated by the family-run watering hole. Heck, its unpretentious vibes happily beckon you to step in and take advantage of its $15 cocktails and $8 before 8pm beers and house pours.

So if you’re seeking a chill night out (or a casual first date bar), hit up the cosy shop house for a post-work drinking session padded by bar bites such as Thai fishcakes ($15), steamed pork buns ($18), and Asian-style tacos with toppings like tom yum goong ($8) and spicy street chicken ($8).

Porn Star Martini

As far as cocktails go, the bar’s bestseller is a blend of vanilla vodka, lime juice, passionfruit, and Prosecco called Porn Star Martini ($15), but you’re more than welcome to stick to familiar concoctions on the menu such as lychee martinis, mojitos, and cosmopolitans.

The Brightside is at 37 Duxton Hill. Mon-Fri noon-11:45pm, Sat 4pm-11:45pm.
