Coconuts Hot Spot: Patro’s Sports Bar & Restaurant

As you walk around the snazzy new Parkland Green in East Coast Park, a curious sign catches your attention: Patro’s Sports Bar & Restaurant – Mexican & North Indian Cuisine. We’re pretty familiar with cultural crossovers and “international flavours” restaurants, but as far as cuisine combinations go, Mexican and North Indian is one of the more unusual. Or is it? Both have their share of colour and spice, both provide proof that vegetarian food can be exciting and both can be complemented with an ice-cold beer or a lime-based beverage.

It makes even more sense when you hear about who’s behind it – Patro’s is the latest venture from the Kinara group of restaurants. And while its name is just one letter off from a famous brand of tequila, Patro is actually the surname of Kinara’s managing director, Raj Patro.

If your thoughts immediately turn to some ill-advised fusion fare like Chettinad chimichangas or tikka tacos, fret not – Patro’s has two separate kitchens serving up its two cuisines independently. On the Mexican side, you can expect fajitas (from $20), enchiladas (from $14), quesadillas (from $9.50) and burritos (from $16) – available with your choice of vegetables, chicken, beef or seafood – and seaside-suitable mains like grilled tiger prawns ($38) and sea bass salsa verde ($45). If the basic level of heat isn’t enough for you, you can also make use of their arsenal of hot sauces.

The North Indian menu features standards that Kinara customers would know very well – tandoor selections (from $14), seafood, lamb and chicken curries (from $17), biryanis (from $15) and plenty of flaky naans (from $3.50).

Drink options are similarly diverse with 52 wines stocked in their cellar, a line-up of classic cocktails (from $14.50), a variety of tequila shots (from $10) and generously-portioned frozen margaritas (from $14.50).

Beyond the comfort food, a big part of what makes a visit to Patro’s enjoyable is simply its location. A breezy spot with a view of the waterfront past a line of frangipani trees, it’s just the right kind of place to cool off after an active day out.

And it’s family-friendly too, with foosball and air hockey tables to keep the kids entertained while their parents catch live football screenings and get reacquainted with the boozy beverages of their youth.

Patro’s is at #01-18/19 Parkland Green, 920 East Coast Parkway, 6440-9372. Open Mon and Wed — Thu 11:30am — 2:30pm and 5:30 — 11pm; Fri — Sat 11:30am —1am; Sun 11am — 11pm.
