COCONUTS HOT SPOT — There’s only one restaurant we go to for delicious and authentic Samsui ginger chicken (the star ingredient of this dish is the ginger, not the chicken), but it involves sitting down and ordering tons of other stuff to go with the heritage dish, which means we end up spending more than we had originally planned. Finally, there’s a cheaper choice.
Soup Restaurant just opened a take-out kiosk at Takashimaya Shopping Centre’s basement food hall, right outside the Cold Storage supermarket entrance. It’s called Chinatown Stall and offers the same quality of dishes found at Soup Restaurant at a cheaper price — a bowl of steamed pearl rice with chicken and Samsui ginger sauce (below) costs $6.50.

Our new favourites, aside from the chicken dish, are the XO shrimp roe noodles with delectable water chestnut meat balls served with poached egg on top ($6.90; below), chili crab tofu ($4.50) and salted egg fried tofu ($4.50).

Since this is a kiosk, all dishes are packed for takeaway. There is, however, a communal eating area at the food hall. Chinatown Stall also offers free delivery services to offices in the vicinity of Takashimaya Shopping Centre, with a minimum of five orders.
Chinatown Stall is open daily 10am-9.30pm at the food basement hall of Takashimaya Shopping Centre.
