Cheers to great gluten-free Mexican grub at the new Super Loco by Marina Bay

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — If you, like us, love Lucha Loco and Super Loco Robertson Quay, and you can’t get enough of the great vibes and Mexican grub at both outlets, you’ll be pleased as punch to discover the new Super Loco Customs House.

Nestled along the waterfront, with splendid views of Marina Bay Sands and all that glitters, this latest venture maintains a casual and fun atmosphere with a slightly more sophisticated twist. And all that is boosted by a bigger menu inspired by Mexican street food and infused with premium ingredients.

Crafted by chef and culinary director Jason Jones, the man behind popular Mexican joint Mamasita in Melbourne, Super Loco’s plates are 90 percent gluten-free, with signatures from the other two restaurants alongside new creations. Admittedly, it’s geared towards a corporate crowd, with more upmarket dishes featuring lobster, wagyu, oysters and the like.

But the space (and its vibes) are anything but stuffy. Round up your besties for a boisterous dinner, chill by the bay with your date and a cocktail in hand, or treat your office buddy to lunch — you won’t feel out of place doing any of that here.

And yes, we did mention lunch. Finally, one of the Loco Group’s outlets opens in the daytime, and that means you can get your Mexican fix (and down a margarita while you’re at it) when the cravings hit. Included on the lunch menu are tortas, salads, sharing platters, tacos, quesadillas and tostadas — pretty much your basic Mexican go-to dishes (but packed with punchy flavours, of course).

There’s also an express lunch set menu that offers three courses ($25) — everything will be served in 20 minutes so you can dash back to the office just in time for your afternoon meeting (so thoughtful). Alternatively, you can browse through the takeaway menu for tortas, tacos, salads and desserts. But if you have time to spare, we suggest you kick back, relax and go for the five-course lunch set ($50).

Dinners are a more extravagant affair. No point in wasting the stunning waterfront views, right? Start off by picking from an array of refreshing salads such as ensalada mixta ($8-$15) of arugula, cherry tomato, blood orange, avocado and roasted pepitas; ensalada granos ($8-$15) with quinoa, pearl barley, almonds, broccoli, pomegranate and pico de gallo; or pepino y mas ($6-$11), a tossed-up mixture of cucumber, mint, yogurt, fennel, green grapes, cactus and capers.

Langosta tostadas

The langosta tostada ($25) is another good option — think lobsters drizzled with lemon dressing and enveloped in a crisp tostada surrounded by avocado, celery hearts, spring onions and orange-infused mayo.

If you’re looking for something to share, try the plato de mariscos ($88) of grilled fish, fresh oysters, flame grilled octopus and barbequed prawns — it comes with tortillas and salsa on the side for you to DIY your own tacos. Or get the pescado asada con chili rojo y perejil ($46) and tuck into the barbequed whole seabass served with red and green salsa.

Another new dish is the traditional tlayuda ($20), a Mexican flatbread that comes with air-dried wagyu, black bean hummus, queso oaxaco and rocket.

For a sweet end to your meal, tuck into Super Loco’s version of tres leches ($13), a plate of three different types of milks presented in three different ways. There’s full cream, condensed and evaporated milk in the form of ice cream, panna cotta and blinis, all served on a bed of milk crumble.

Of course, you can’t pay a visit to Super Loco without sipping on the cocktails, and this one has more than 20 options (including nine types of margaritas) that you can choose from. Some of the must-tries include prickly pear mezcalita ($18), a mezcal-based margarita with bergamot and spearmint-infused agave nectar; coco mojo ($17), made with citrus fruits, coconut water and Cimarron Blanco tequila; and mexpresso martini ($18) of vodka, Kahlua, a shot of espresso and a splash of mezcal.

Oh, and you won’t find any sugar syrup in the cocktails here — only organic agave nectar and agave infusions, if that makes you feel better about knocking back three or four in one night. So… bottoms up!

Super Loco Customs House is at #01-04 Customs House, 70 Collyer Quay, 6532-2090. Mon-Fri noon-midnight, Sat 5pm-midnight.
